Carlos Chavez
Carlos Chavez (1899-1978) was the most significant Mexican composer of the twentieth century. A prolific composer, he wrote many ballets, symphonies, concertos, and pieces for voice, piano and chamber ensembles. He was also a music writer and educator. His La Paloma Azul(1939) and Tree of Sorrow(1949) are choral works included in this performance.
Alberto Ginastera
Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) was an Argentine composer of classical music, whose musical talents were noted as a young child. He grouped his music into three periods, with his early works integrating Argentine folk themes and his later works putting these same elements into increasingly abstracted forms. Lamentations of Jeremiah(1946), a choral piece, and Toccata, Villancico y Fugo(1947), an organ work, will be performed at this concert.
Heitor Villa-Lobos
Heitor Villa-Lobos (1877-1959) was a Brazilian composer who has become the best-known South American composer of all time. He enjoyed a stellar international career as a composer, received a large number of commissions for a wide variety of instruments and voices and at his death left over 2000 known works. Ave Maria(1938), Aria from Bachianas Brasileiras No.5 (1938-45) and Magnificat-Alleluia (1958) are included in this program
