The Seasons contains some of the most varied and fascinating ideas; some humorous, some pictorial, others noble and brilliantly descriptive in manner.
The Seasons had its first performance April 24, 1801 in Viena at the Schwatzenberg Palace. Hadyn had just turned 70 years old. While working on it, he remarked, "I have been industrious all my life, but I never expected to set industry to music."
The oratorio is divided into four parts. Each part has its recitative, aria, ensemble, and chorale.
